Common use
Xylocaine is primarily used for local anesthesia, to numb tissues in specific areas. This medicine falls into the category of local anaesthetics, which are commonly applied to numb specific body parts before medical procedures. In addition to its main use, this gel also offers relief from pain, irritation, and itching associated with minor skin conditions, abrasions, and insect bites. It further reduces discomfort during medical procedures involving tubes inserted into the mouth, throat, nose, or urinary tract and acts as a lubricant for endotracheal intubation and catheterization.
Dosage and direction
Always ensure the area of application is clean before applying the gel. Apply a thin layer of the gel to the affected area gently massaging it in, not more than 3-4 times daily. Avoid contact with your eyes, nose, and mouth. After applying the gel, remember to wash your hands unless you're treating them.
Precautions
Liver disease: If you have liver problems, your body's ability to break down lignocaine might be reduced. This can lead to higher levels of the medication in your blood.
Kidney disease: Lidocaine is excreted by the kidneys. So, if you have kidney disease, it could potentially prolong the action of lidocaine.
Contraindications
Caution is advised while using Xylocaine if you are pregnant or while breastfeeding. It is best to consult your doctor before using this medicine.
Xylocaine is contraindicated in patients with a known history of hypersensitivity to lignocaine or other amide-type anaesthetics. If you have allergies, inform your doctor before starting this medicine.
Caution is advised while giving Xylocaine to children under 18 years of age. Always consult your doctor before giving any medicine to a child.
Possible side effect
Xylocaine may result in certain side effects, including: Burning sensation; Itching; Redness; Irritation; Drowsiness.
Drug interaction
Central Nervous System (CNS) depressants like alprazolam and diazepam, which slow brain activity, may have their effects amplified when used with Xylocaine. This could lead to increased drowsiness or slowed breathing.
Antiarrhythmic medicines like amiodarone and propafenone, used to manage irregular heartbeats, may interact with Xylocaine. This could potentially affect the heart rate, requiring close monitoring.
Missed dose
If you forget to apply Xylocaine as scheduled, do so as soon as you remember. However, if it's nearly time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and continue with your usual schedule. Don't increase your dosage without discussing it with your doctor.
Overdose
If you accidentally apply more Xylocaine than recommended, you might experience common side effects like a burning sensation or redness at the application site. If these symptoms persist or worsen, inform your doctor.
Storage
Store Xylocaine in a cool, dry place. It should be kept from direct sunlight and moisture to preserve its efficacy. Keep it tightly closed when not in use. Always keep this medication out of the reach of children. Make sure to use Xylocaine before the expiry date.
